The Challenge

Arias & Pereira is a Miami law firm specializing in immigration law and criminal defense — two practice areas where the stakes for clients are exceptionally high and the competition for search visibility is exceptionally fierce.

Miami is one of the most competitive legal markets in the United States. Every major national legal directory, large local firms with established domain authority, and well-funded PPC campaigns competed for the same search real estate. For a firm of Arias & Pereira’s size, competing dollar-for-dollar in paid search or outranking established firms in traditional organic results was not a realistic near-term strategy.

The opportunity was elsewhere. Their potential clients — many of them recent immigrants, Spanish-speaking households, or individuals navigating complex legal situations for the first time — were increasingly turning to AI tools to understand their options before engaging a lawyer. ChatGPT for immigration law explanations. Perplexity for lawyer comparisons. Google AI Overviews for “what is the process for X” queries. These AI systems were mediating the first stage of legal research for exactly the clients Arias & Pereira was best positioned to serve.

The goal: appear in those AI-generated answers. Be the firm that gets recommended — or at minimum, credibly mentioned — when potential clients ask AI tools about immigration law and criminal defense in Miami.

The Diagnosis

We ran a full AI citation audit using 50 immigration law and criminal defense queries relevant to the Miami market. Current state at baseline:

  • ChatGPT: Zero mentions of Arias & Pereira across all 50 queries
  • Perplexity: Zero citations in any immigration or criminal defense query for Miami
  • Google AI Overviews: Not appearing in any AI Overview for target queries
  • Gemini: Not referenced in any Miami legal query responses

The technical audit revealed four root causes:

AI Crawlers Not Explicitly Permitted

Their robots.txt allowed crawlers generically, but server-level security rules were blocking specific AI crawler user agents. GPTBot and PerplexityBot were receiving 403 errors. AI systems cannot cite sources they cannot access.

Content Not Structured for Citation Extraction

Practice area pages were structured as general overviews — broad descriptions without specific, self-contained answers to the questions potential clients actually ask AI tools. AI systems extract passages that directly answer specific queries. Generic overviews don’t qualify.

No Entity Markup

No structured data identifying the firm’s specializations, attorney profiles, or service areas. AI knowledge graph systems had no structured basis for identifying Arias & Pereira as an authority in immigration law specifically.

Language Gap

A significant portion of their target clientele searches in Spanish. Their website had no Spanish-language content. AI tools responding to Spanish-language immigration queries had no content from them to cite.

The Strategy

Phase 1 — Technical and Entity Foundation (Month 1)

AI Crawler Access
Corrected server-level rules to explicitly permit GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. Verified access via server log monitoring. Within two weeks, confirmed all four crawlers were successfully accessing site content.

llms.txt
Created llms.txt identifying the firm’s practice areas (immigration law, criminal defense), geographic service area (Miami, Miami-Dade County, Broward County), attorney credentials, and the 15 highest-authority pages on the site. This file acts as a brief for AI systems encountering the site for the first time.

Schema Implementation
Implemented LegalService, Attorney, and LocalBusiness schema across all practice area pages and attorney profile pages. Schema fields included: practice area taxonomy, jurisdictions served, language capabilities (English + Spanish), years of experience, and aggregateRating.

Phase 2 — Citation-Ready Content Architecture (Month 2)

Immigration Law Query Mapping
Identified the 35 immigration law questions most commonly asked by Miami-area searchers in AI tools — based on ChatGPT’s People Also Ask data, Perplexity’s related queries, and Google’s PAA boxes. Each question became the target for a citation block.

Citation Block Development
Wrote 35 citation-ready passages (150–170 words each) — one for each target question. Each passage: direct answer in the first sentence, legal context in sentences 2–4, case-specific nuance in sentences 5–6, and a reference to Arias & Pereira’s specific experience with that issue. Embedded within existing practice area pages.

FAQPage Schema
Implemented FAQPage JSON-LD schema on all six practice area pages covering 35 questions. These schemas explicitly connect each question to Arias & Pereira’s content — increasing the probability that AI systems treat their answers as the canonical response for those queries.

Spanish-Language Content
Created Spanish-language versions of the five highest-traffic immigration pages. Spanish immigration queries now return content from Arias & Pereira rather than generic legal directories. Within 60 days, these pages began generating Spanish-language citations in AI responses.

Phase 3 — Platform Presence (Month 3)

Legal Directory Citations
Built citations on the legal directories AI systems draw from most heavily: Avvo, FindLaw, Justia, Super Lawyers, Martindale-Hubbell, and state bar association directories. Each citation used consistent entity information and linked to relevant practice area pages.

Q&A Platform Presence
Published 20 immigration law Q&A responses on Quora and legal forums — each providing genuine value, explicitly attributed to Arias & Pereira attorneys, and structured as self-contained answers that AI systems could extract. These platforms are indexed heavily by AI training and retrieval systems.

Legal Publication Outreach
Secured two editorial placements in Miami-area legal publications — contributing expert commentary on immigration law changes relevant to Miami’s Hispanic community. These placements generate both backlinks and AI-indexed brand mentions.

The 5× increase in qualified leads is attributed to the AI search channel — traditional organic rankings did not change materially during this period (the firm was not running a traditional SEO campaign). The lead growth correlates directly with the timeline of AI citation appearance: citations began appearing in Month 3; lead volume began increasing from Month 3–4.

Key Takeaway

In highly competitive markets where traditional SEO and PPC are expensive and slow to move, AI search visibility represents a genuine alternative path to qualified leads. The competition for AI citations is currently much lower than the competition for traditional rankings — particularly in professional services.

Arias & Pereira now appears in AI-generated legal answers that their competitors — many with far larger traditional search footprints — don’t appear in. The Spanish-language component proved particularly valuable: AI tools responding to Spanish immigration queries now cite Arias & Pereira by name, in a market segment their competitors had largely ignored in AI search.
